Kevin Bauman heard about the Polynesian Bowl from several other members of Notre Dame’s 2020 class, and did some research on the January all-star game.

Now, he is playing in it.

The four-star tight end from Red Bank (N.J.) Catholic and long-time Notre Dame commit is the latest big-time prospect to commit to playing in the game in January.

“It seems like a beautiful place,” the 6-foot-5, 238-pound Bauman said. “We have some guys in our recruiting class who are from Hawaii and have that background, so it will be cool to have something a lot different than anywhere else you can travel, and to also play against some of the top players in the country and work with them and have some fun in a great place.”

Linebacker Jordan Botelho of Honolulu St. Louis is part of Notre Dame’s class. Also, Notre Dame commits Chris Tyree of Chester (Va.) Thomas Dale and Michael Carmody of Mars (Pa.) Area are playing in the Polynesian Bowl.

“I’m just taking in the whole experience,” said Bauman, who is the No. 6 tight end in the 247Sports Composite. “It is not very often you get to go to Hawaii and play with such great players. I just want to enjoy it and soak it in and to work hard and have some fun and finish my high school career that way.”

Bauman is yet to travel to Hawaii, so combining football with visiting the scenic, beautiful island of Oahu has him excited. He is also eager to learn more about the game.

“I know just from reading about it and some guy who played in it, and I know how it (teaches) the history of Polynesian football,” Bauman said. “I just know what I know from reading about it and seeing some guys who played in it.”

Bauman has long been tied to the Notre Dame, which has the No. 6 class in the 247Sports Composite team rankings.

He was the second member of the 2020 class to commit to Irish. His decision came June 13, 2018, and he has not wavered with it. In addition to the outstanding academic reputation of the school, Bauman embraced Notre Dame’s tight end tradition.

“I love it,” he said. “Going back through the history of Notre Dame, especially in the last 15 years, they really have been Tight End U, and putting guys in the NFL. But also in the way they develop and use their tight ends. They are one of the few schools that will use two tight ends, even three tight end sets on a regular basis, which you really can’t find anywhere else in the country.
