MONMOUTH COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS, 2018: RBC GIRLS CLAIM SEVENTH TEAM TITLE

The team title streak continued for the boys at the 2018 Monmouth County Championships while a slight drought was broken on the girls side. The Christian Brothers boys and Red Bank Catholic girls claimed the 2018 Monmouth County Championship team titles. For CBA, it's the ninth consecutive year the Colts have raised the county trophy and the 24th overall time dating back to 1982. For the Caseys its their first time atop the county since 2012, when they won three straight team championships between 2010 and 2012, and the eighth overall title. The Colts finished with 103 points, over 40 more than the next team, and received plenty of points via their field athletes, especially on day two in the shot put event. The Colts placed three of the top four finishers led by Dan Mead and his NJ#3 toss of 60-4.25 followed by Nicholas Morse in second at NJ#10 56-3.25 and Anthony Zamarra earning fourth place with a 50-11.5 toss. Mead also won the discus event Wednesday with a 161-0 throw. Both Tim McInerney and Andrew Canale placed in two events. McInerney did so by winning the 1600m event Wednesday in a blazing NJ#1 4:10.75 that set a meet record, formerly held by Colts Neck's Craig Forys set at 4:13.88 in 2007, then following that up with a bronze in the 800m race with a time of 1:55.03. Canale claimed gold in the 400m dash with a 48.38 time then added a third-place finish as well in the 200m dash, clocking in at 22.42. Troy Hill placed second in the 3200m race in 9:36.31 while teammates Tanner Crochet and Mike Morris contributed to the point total with a 5-6 finish. Liam O'Hara added silver in the 400m hurdles in 55.81 while Lars Enstrom tied for third in the pole vault by clearing 12-6. For Red Bank Catholic, Jyllissa Harris could do no wrong. The Caseys senior won three events over the course of the two days, claiming gold in the triple jump, high jump and 100m hurdles. She won the triple jump with a 35-11.25 leap and cleared 5-2 in the high jump on the least attempts to earn gold again. On the track she crossed the finish line in 15.37 in the 100m hurdles to finish off the triple. Tara Zeni held down the fort in the long jump with an NJ#6 18-3.5 winning performance while both Carly Friend and Jessie Castellano won their respective events as well. Castellano ran an NJ#9 56.97 to win the 400m dash while Friend earned gold in the 400m hurdles, clocking in at 1:06.38. The Caseys' relay teams secured a pair of gold medals. On Wednesday the 4x800m relay team claimed first in 9:38.64 while the 4x400m relay team made the leap into the top 10 4x4 performances in the state this season, running an NJ#6 3:56.15. OTHER HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MONMOUTH COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS • Speaking of that girls triple jump, Harris certainly didn't win it easy. While her 35-11.25 leap won the event, two other girls in Marlboro's Gianna Gomez and Long Branch's Brianna Hills were not far behind. Gomez placed in a close second off a 35-10.5 jump while Hills was right there with the two, earning third place with a 35-9.75 performance. • There's something about the Monmouth County Championships that brings out the best in Freehold Township's Nick Lundberg. The junior won the boys 3200m race in 9:31.52, topping his former PR set at last year's county championships at 9:38.52. • Manalapan, which had the 19th fastest boys 4x100m relay time heading into Friday, is your newest 4x1 team with a top-ten time in the state. The team of Christopher Maiurro, Scott Scherzer, Brandon Williams and Dashawn Williams won in 43.03 to earn the NJ#8 mark by 0.02 seconds. • The Howell throwers on the girls side certainly did their part of the Rebels. Freshman Bryanna Wilson, who is keeping a family throwing tradition alive, won both the discus and shot put events with respective throws of 118-4 and 36-9 while teammate Hanna Rosenmertz finished right behind Wilson in the shot put, placing second with a 35-10.25 toss.
